How to install async driver on ESXi 5.x and 6.x using esxcli and VIB file or offline bundle

Here I will show you how to install async driver on ESXi 5.x and 6.x using esxcli and VIB file or offline bundle. The same task can be accomplished using GUI and VMware Update Manager, but this will be covered in one of the future how-tos.

Once you have downloaded your driver either in VIB format of as offline bundle, connect to your ESXi server using WinSCP or any other SCP client, and transfer driver to /tmp folder. Open SSH session to your ESXi server, and install the driver using one of the following commands:

If using VIB file:

esxcli software vib install -v /tmp/driver-file.vib

If using offline bundle:

esxcli software vib install -d /tmp/driver-file-offline-bundle.zip

Remember to uninstall the old version of the driver you have just installed. To display all drivers installed, use the following command:

esxcli software vib list

To remove the driver use the following command:

esxcli software vib remove --vibname=full-vib-name-from-the-list
